Introduction:

Nearly all my observing is devoted to visual variable star observing however, like all good amateurs, I can't resist having a look at any major events that take place such as bright comets and major meteor showers etc. Of course there are also the planets, and on a very steady night I make take a look at Saturn and Jupiter on my way to the telescopes park position. In the past, I've also dabbled in astrophotography using film and recently a digital camera. Below are some of my meagre attempts at imaging and drawing.

A single 120 second exposure of NGC2261 using a 90mm Mak/Cass telescope.

Comet McNaught, taken using a Fuji Finepix camera. This was more or less the last time Uk observers got to observe it before the comet headed south.

The picture at left is of M45 and Comet Machholz taken with a Fuji Finepix digital camera on a clockwork drive. The zoom was set to full optical equivalent of a 110mm lens, the exposure was 15sec. The image is made from10X15sec. exposures with only the contrast and brightness adjusted. The field shows stars down to Magnitude 10.8 (Guide 8.0). This demonstrates the potential of even the most basic setup using digital cameras.
